Retro Done Right

I got this card of Phil Esposito (who I mostly remember from his Rangers coaching days) in a pack of O-Pee-Chee hockey this past week, and man, it's a beaut. (The whole OPC hockey set's been great again this year, though.) There's been a not-totally-unreasonable backlash lately against all the retro, throwback, etc. sets we've been inundated with over the past decade, but once in a while, the card companies do get it right and justify some of the Chicle disasters, the Yo Momma reprints of '08 cards and the other stuff that's just plain nonsense. For another really nice example of an art department nailing it, check out this Topps Magic card of Jim Brown:

Pretty awesome, right? Not all of the photography/art has translated well in this year's Magic set (the Elway card looks WEIRD), but this is one they hit it out of the park on.
