The $5 Challenge II: Pig In The City

The Card: 1999 Upper Deck Michael Jordan set #1
Total price including shipping: $.55 (already $.05 over budget, but I couldn't deny that face!)
Remaining funds: $4.45
Why?: Because this card is so freakin' awesome I can't stand it.

Yep, it's that time again, kids. The $5 Challenge, or, as its originator, Johnny hiflew calls it, Budget eBay Collector is LIVE for March! This one should be especially interesting, as last month, I was running unopposed, and this month, Johnny and I (and who knows how many other depraved individuals who read our sites) are both taking the Challenge! We're already trying to figure out how to not step on each other's toes AND not miss deals, and this assumes that no one else is going to try for the stuff we're after!

Having had a month's worth of practice, I think I'll fare better this time. I hope, anyway. Johnny did go with modified rules for this month, to make it more challenging than it already was.

The premise, for those of you who missed it last time and don't want to follow a link: I have $5 budgeted to acquire at least 10 desirable cards on eBay and have them shipped to me. If I go over, I lose. If I don't, I win. What do I win? The cards, I guess. I dunno. It's some kinda Eastern thing.

The good news: We are allowed to bid on lots of cards this month (however, each lot only counts as 1 card toward our 10 card goal). I could've absolutely obliterated the Challenge in February, were I given this option.

The bad news: This time, all 10 cards have to either be pre-my birth year ('73-back for me), an autograph, relic, parallel or numbered card, or part of one of my personal collections (Little Mike up there qualifies, as I collect both his baseball and his basketball cards), but not from '86-'94, even if I need it!

One possible change on my end this month: I may not post every card I win as The $5 Challenge is in progress, as I think we need to get a little more hush about things, dig? Then again, I might. I'll play it by ear.

Two differences between how Johnny (a seasoned pro) and I are rolling: as with last month, I won't be restricting myself to 15 minutes per day, because my brain would explode. However, I have developed enough of a system of doing this for me not to spend 18 hours a day on eBay, so my time sink will be much less than it was in February, ideally. Also, as with last month's failed attempt on my part, I will not be restricting my eBay purchases solely to $5 Challenge stuff, because I do have a lot of irons (too many) in the fire at the moment, and unlike Johnny, I don't typically do wax boxes or blasters. I do have $5 budgeted specifically for this, though, and unless I want the yodeller to fall off the mountain, I have to get at least 10 qualifying cards with it. Besides, if I got nothing but $5 Challenge stuff last month, I wouldn't have been able to get a relic card of the greatest celebrity of our age, or share this magnificent bastard of a card (obtained as a bonus along with the Sheen card) with you!

Plenty more on this, including discussion, over at this post on Cards from the Quarry, but for now...GAME ON!

  1. Good start.

As far as stepping on toes, I don't really care if you snipe me on trade bait stuff, just avoid Rockies please. It's all for fun anyway.

  2. I can avoid teh Rockies, no sweat. Of course, if it's a Rockie card you already have and don't think you can get much in trade for (particularly of Dante Bichette, as he's the only one on the team that I'm actively collecting right now, or if it's an '11 Topps shiny diamond card), feel free to give me a head's up. I'll do the same for you, obviously.

  3. I am going to try to stick to the parallel rule for Rockies and Mashburns as well unless something blows me away.

As far as the diamonds I will not be getting them this go around, because they are still too new and overpriced. That and I think they are very ugly, but I still want the Rox lol.

  4. Yeah, I don't expect to land any diamonds sub-$.50 on eBay. I do loves teh shiny, though. Only 95% more of that set to go, as of today! :P
