The Round-Up For 10/06/12

Just sending out a quick one today, because I didn't cover this stuff in my other, Update-centered posts this weekend.

This rather awesome on-card Jose Vidro autograph (Don't laugh! The guy was one of the last good Expos, and he was fantasy gold for a minute) came from Jeff at 2 by 3 Heroes, who's getting a Ben Petrick auto back for it, along with some minis, '12s and other stuff (Jeff's big into Whitehawks and Black Sox, or something like that, and I found a bunch of them hockey fellers and a few cool baseball cats within his interests, too). Jeff and I have been putting together one of a few deals I've done in the last few weeks, and it's been fun. I'm a little late in getting his stuff out to him (been under the weather this week, didn't have his address until Thursday and I was out of boxen until this afternoon), but he'll be seeing a package sometime next week with some cool stuff in it.

Still working on a few deals (Shane, should be getting into my doubles boxes again tonight or tomorrow), but I seem to be clearing 'em off the table pretty quickly lately, too. It helps when they don't get into large flat rate box territory, but even some of those get cranked out fast.

I've got '12 Update stuff (base and some inserts) for trade now, so send your lists. Mine looks like this right now (and will probably stay the same until I do some trading):

I did just finish off '89 Donruss (Thanks, Bo!), so that's one more thing I never have to worry about again. '86-'92 done there now, to go along with '78-'93 Topps, '88-'92 Fleer, '88-'91 Score and I'm closing in on '89-'92 Upper Deck.

So yeah, if you've got this stuff, help a brother out!

As posted earlier in the week, I did get one of my weirder white whales out of the way...

It arrived today! After shipping, I actually paid a whopping $3.25 for a friggin' early '90s CMG/Megacards single, because it was that much of a pain in the ass to get one. I probably could've gotten a complete set or a wax box for around that, had I shopped around more, but I've got the only other card I wanted from the set already, and at some point, I gotta draw some lines in the sand about what I let into my house. It's really one of the coolest, most surreal baseball pictures I've ever seen, though, and I'm very happy to have it in the collection.

So, an entire regular season has come and gone, and I have yet to receive a single entry in my Free Mariano Rivera Autograph Contest. Mind-boggling. Granted, I have pretty strict parameters for entry/winning the card in a pretty adult-centered hobby, but not even one kid likes Mo enough to write in? Baffling. Is it a "Mom, dad, a weirdo on the Internet wants my address!" thing? Entirely possible. May have to figure out another way to go about this. Thoughts?

Actually got an idea that I'm probably going through with soon: do any of you keep a doubles/trade box aside specifically for folks you trade with regularly, with sections for each trader and maybe even a quick note about what they collect on the divider? Strongly considering this. If I do and you want me to make you a section, let me know.

Closing out this edition of The Round-Up with another card from Jeff, and one of the most awesome relic cards I've ever seen. It's definitely top 5 in my collection, at least (it's pretty hard to argue with Spider Jorgensen, Roy Campanella's pants and the Charlie Sheen relic as well). Yes, it's a friggin' Deivi Cruz bat relic. Even better, it's post-prospect for him (there was some buzz about him when he was a Tiger; I actually drafted him in one of my fantasy drafts, no joke). Why can't I pull relics of guys like this when I open wax, instead of the "veteran relief pitchers that no one collects like Jose Valverde and Carlos Marmol" relics? I used to reserve these complaints for Miguel Tejada relics, but Ryan mercifully took those off my hands. Who would be a good modern counterpart to Deivi Cruz? Baseball Reference compares Deivi to Yuniensky Betancourt, but I dunno if I'd go there. Freddy Galvis? Maybe Emo Juan Uribe? At any rate, this card is awesome, and it even captures his 20 game, career-ending stint with the Nats. Thanks again, Jeff!

  1. Glad you enjoyed the package. When you asked about the Deivi I thought "WHAT? Really? That one? He must know something I don't", but if someone asks, I know they would appreciate the card more than I ever will, so it was great to put it into your hands. Can't wait to trade again with you.
